Diamond Grinding vs Acid Etching: Why Prep Matters

Last updated: January 5, 2026

Surface preparation is the foundation of every floor coating. Get it wrong, and even the best materials will fail. Get it right, and your floor will last for years. That's why we diamond grind every floor—no exceptions, no shortcuts.

Diamond grinding uses industrial equipment with diamond-embedded segments to mechanically profile the concrete surface. It removes the weak surface layer (called laitance), opens the concrete pores, and creates a rough profile that coating can physically lock into. Think of it like sanding wood before painting—you're creating mechanical adhesion, not just chemical bond.

Acid etching, by contrast, uses muriatic or phosphoric acid to chemically etch the concrete surface. It's faster and cheaper, which is why many DIY kits and budget contractors use it. But here's the problem: acid etching only cleans the surface—it doesn't create the same mechanical profile that diamond grinding achieves.

We've seen the results of acid-etched floors that failed within months. The coating looked fine at first, then started peeling at edges and high-traffic areas. Hot tires accelerated the failure. Within a year, the floor looked worse than before it was coated. The homeowner had to pay again—this time for proper removal and reinstallation.

Diamond grinding also lets us address concrete issues that acid can't touch. We grind down high spots, remove old coatings and sealers, and create a level surface. If there are cracks or spalls, grinding prepares them for proper repair. Acid just sits on top of whatever's there.

Our process starts with grinding using progressively finer diamond tooling, followed by thorough vacuuming to remove all dust. We then test moisture levels with a Tramex CME5 meter—elevated moisture will cause coating failure regardless of prep method. Only when the surface is properly profiled and dry do we proceed with coating.

Yes, diamond grinding costs more than acid etching. But it's the difference between a floor that lasts a decade and one that fails in a year. We don't cut corners on prep because we don't want callbacks. Every floor we coat is built to last.
