What is Flake Floors?

Flake epoxy flooring is a hybrid coating system engineered for maximum durability: a 100% solids epoxy base coat for deep concrete penetration and bond strength, topped with decorative vinyl flakes, and sealed with a UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat. This hybrid approach combines the best properties of each material—epoxy's ability to "wet out" into concrete pores during its 12-24 hour cure, and polyaspartic's UV stability, chemical resistance, and fast return to service.

How It Works

We diamond grind the concrete to create a mechanical bond profile. After moisture testing confirms proper conditions, we apply a 100% solids epoxy base coat. The slow cure time (12-24 hours) allows the epoxy to deeply penetrate concrete pores and create a true mechanical bond—something fast-curing polyaspartic cannot achieve. Decorative vinyl flakes are broadcast at full saturation, then scraped and vacuumed smooth. A UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat seals the system, handling UV exposure, hot tires, and chemical resistance.

Ideal For

Residential garages (interior)
Workshops and home gyms
Basement floors
Commercial showrooms
Patios and pool decks requiring exterior-rated broadcast systems

Why We Use a Hybrid System (Not One-Day Polyaspartic)

Many companies advertise "one-day garage floor coatings" using 100% polyaspartic systems. While convenient, this approach sacrifices long-term performance for speed. Here's why we use epoxy base with polyaspartic topcoat:

AspectOur Hybrid SystemOne-Day Polyaspartic
Concrete PenetrationDeep penetration—epoxy "wets out" into pores during 12-24 hour cureSurface-level bond only—1-4 hour cure doesn't allow penetration
Bond StrengthTrue mechanical bond locked into concrete matrixWeaker surface adhesion with higher delamination risk
Moisture ToleranceHandles 4-5 lbs MVER—tolerates typical residential slabsOnly ~3 lbs MVER—fails on many residential slabs
Flake AdhesionSlow-curing epoxy holds flakes securely during broadcastFast cure can cause poor flake embedment
Intercoat AdhesionProper cure windows between coatsRushed timing can cause layer separation
UV/Chemical ResistancePolyaspartic topcoat handles all surface wearSame—polyaspartic topcoat performs equally
Return to ServiceVehicle traffic in 48-72 hoursVehicle traffic in 24 hours

Exterior Applications: System Selection Matters

For patios, pool decks, steps, and other exterior concrete, we use decorative broadcast systems designed for outdoor exposure, UV stability, traction, and freeze-thaw durability. The exact build is selected based on the substrate, moisture condition, drainage, sun exposure, and performance requirements of the project.

Our Installation Process

1

Diamond Grinding

Industrial diamond grinding to remove contaminants, open concrete pores, and create proper surface profile for adhesion. No acid etching shortcuts.

2

Moisture Testing

Non-destructive moisture testing using Tramex CME5 impedance meter. If moisture exceeds 4-5 lbs MVER, a moisture vapor barrier is applied.

3

Crack and Joint Repair

Filling cracks, spalls, and damaged areas with appropriate repair materials.

4

Moisture Vapor Barrier (If Required)

When moisture testing indicates elevated levels, a vapor barrier system is applied to prevent moisture transmission and coating failure.

5

100% Solids Epoxy Base Coat

Applying high-build 100% solids epoxy. The 12-24 hour cure time allows deep penetration into concrete pores for maximum adhesion.

6

Full Flake Broadcast

Broadcasting decorative vinyl flakes into the wet epoxy at full coverage. The epoxy holds flakes securely during its extended cure.

7

Scrape and Vacuum

Scraping loose flakes and vacuuming to create a smooth, even surface for topcoat application.

8

Polyaspartic Topcoat

Applying UV-stable polyaspartic clear coat for hot tire resistance, chemical protection, and long-term durability.

Care & Maintenance

Sweep or dust mop regularly to remove debris. Clean with water and a pH-neutral cleaner as needed. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or rubber-backed mats which can discolor the surface. Clean up chemical spills promptly to prevent staining.
