Epoxy vs Polyaspartic: Which is Right for Your Garage?

Last updated: November 5, 2025

When researching garage floor coatings, you'll encounter two main types: epoxy and polyaspartic. Both are excellent materials, but they serve different purposes in a complete coating system. Understanding the differences will help you make an informed decision.

Epoxy resins have been the backbone of industrial floor coatings for decades. They're known for excellent adhesion to concrete, high chemical resistance, and the ability to build significant thickness. Epoxy creates a strong bond with prepared concrete and provides the foundation of many coating systems. However, standard epoxy has limitations: it can yellow under UV exposure, requires longer cure times, and has limited temperature tolerance during application.

Polyaspartic coatings are a newer technology that offers some significant advantages. They cure much faster than epoxy (full cure in 24 hours vs. several days), have excellent UV stability so they won't yellow, and can be applied in a much wider temperature range—important for our Alberta climate. Polyaspartic also has good abrasion resistance and flexibility.

So which should you choose? In many cases, the answer is both. A well-designed coating system often uses epoxy for the base coat (taking advantage of its excellent adhesion and build) and polyaspartic for the topcoat (utilizing its UV stability, fast cure, and wear resistance).

Single-coat systems exist, but they typically sacrifice something. All-epoxy systems may yellow and take longer to cure. All-polyaspartic systems may not bond as well or build as much thickness. The combination approach gives you the best properties of each material.

When evaluating quotes, ask what materials are being used for each layer. Understanding the complete system—not just whether it's 'epoxy' or 'polyaspartic'—will help you compare options accurately and make the best choice for your space.
